This presentation provides an introduction to snow research methods and explains the importance and utility or snow measurements and associated data processing and modeling approaches. Snowpack is an important hydrological reservoir and has an important impact on several climatological variables. Two case studies will be presented and discussed to provide participants with relevant information on the following considerations:

1. Understand why snow is such an important resource hydrologically and climatologically.

2. What do snow scientists care about when we are measuring snow and how have snow scientists taken these measurements?

3. Have a general understanding how cosmic ray neutron sensing is used to measure snow.

4. Understand how snow affects frozen ground dynamics.

5. Discuss how a process-based model is used to model snowpack dynamics in the Northeastern United States.
